‘Westworld’ Season 1 Review (No Spoilers)

Imagine being able to step into a virtual reality word that would look so much like ours that you couldn’t make a difference. A theme park where you can live out your craziest fantasies: You can buy drinks at the local saloon or pay for sex with one of the prostitutes at the bar or join a group of bounty hunters and go on a mission to save the town from outlaws’. HBOs new Sci-Fi/western Westworld makes this all come true.

Set in the near future, with western themed amusement park and extremely life like robot called hosts this park allows you to submerge in a fantasy world for 40 thousands dollars a day. A bargain right?

The hosts are nearly as real as we are. But they are not supposed to think by their own instead they are programmed to follow a certain narrative and never hurt a living things which is why we see flies crawl all over their faces and the hosts do nothing about it . But when something goes wrong in these robots, everything changes…

Loosely based on the 1973 movie by Michael Crichton (also the creator of Jurassic Park), this show was created by Jonathan Nolan and his wife Lisa Joy Nolan. Part of what makes this show so great is its philosophical side and how deep it digs into the biggest of philosophical questions: what makes us human?

Another executive producer of the show is J.J Abraham. Known for mastering the art of mystery in shows like Lost, he made sure to incorporate this side in this show. In fact I am fascinated by the   deliberate plotting that leaves just enough shrouded in mystery while giving us some bread crumbs to lead us to the answers.

I was also excited to see an all star cast that features very famous film stars like Anthony Hopkins or Ed Harris or James Marsden. This show has one of the best cats on TV right now.  I am amazed how great everyone’s acting is, even the lesser known faces.

One of the most notable actors is Evan Rachel Wood who made such a tremendous job at portraying her character Dolores. Anthony Hopkins is also excellent at the show. Arguably his biggest comeback yet, this is one of his best performances, perhaps even beating Silence of Lambs. I could go on and on about how great his performance is but the video below does that perfectly.

The visuals in this show are on a whole new level. Hell, even the opening credits (video bellow) are superb. The landscapes, the costumes, the effects in both the real world and the virtual one make this show so beautiful to watch.

In order to afford this cast and these visuals, the show has a huge budget. The first season supposedly cost over 54 m $. Not a surprise for HBO who have created some of the most expensive shows like Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire.

I found the first season of the show gripping from start to finish. It ended on a perfect note with an incredible 90 min finale. It’s tremendous television with a lot of potential.  As of now the creators have 5 seasons and even a series’ finale mapped out. And I must say that I can’t wait to watch the next season of the show which is rumored to premiere in beginning 2018 or its summer or at the end of the year depending on how fast the production goes. Have you watched Westworld? What do you think of this new HBO hit? Let us know in the comments.
