Today was the last day of MineCon 2016 and it did not disappoint. There were some other things going on but the most important thing announced was what was coming up with the 1.11 update that I mentioned yesterday. Well, the change log was released and the following are some highlights and some of my favorite things.
Llamas! Llama llama llama! Llamas will be mobs that spawn natural and be passive. They will attack enemies by sharply spitting at them. If they spit at wolves, the wolves will run from them. Much like donkeys, they can be equipped with a chest and if you put a colored carpet in the chest, it will wear that color as its saddle. They can also be leashed much like horses can but, if you put it on a leash the difference is, all llamas in a small radius will be attracted and try to form a caravan behind the leaded llama. They will come in numerous colors as well just like horses and donkeys.
Shulkers, those hostile little creatures in end cities will now drop a shell and if combined with a chest, will create a new item called a Shulker Box. What is a shulker box you ask? It is a chest that when broken, will still contain all of the goodies inside. Shulker Boxes were added because of complaints of crowded inventories with new items. To craft them you will need one chest and two shulker shells. They are placed and opened like regular inventory chests and can be held in your inventory like a backpack. It will break if pushed by a piston and can be placed by a dispenser. One draw back is, you can’t put a shulker box inside a shulker box.
Another big addition are treasure maps. They are just like regular maps but they lead to hidden structures like dungeons, monuments, temples, and etc. The item will start as a map with oulines of land with no loaded land shown. It will load land once you find it like a normal map does. The way they work is that when you look at the map you will be represented as a dot. You will then know which direction to head in. You will be a little dot if you are far away or a bigger dot if you are closer. The closer you get, the bigger the dot gets. Also, one of the new dungeons are called Woodland Mansions. They are a giant generated dungeon and they will spawn in the dark oak forests. They will be considered as end game type challenge so make sure you come well armored, well geared with weapons, food, and potions galore to survive.
“How do I get these new treasure maps?” Glad you asked! There will be a new villager moving into a village near you called a “Cartographer Villager” who will trade in treasure maps and map related items. You will have to trade in emeralds and compasses for the maps with special stuff. They will be dressed in white. Another new “villager” is called an “Illager”. They are like villagers but hostile. They will be found in the Woodland Mansion dungeons. The mansions will be built out of cobblestone walls, blocks, slabs and stairs, dark oak wood and planks, birch fences and planks, glass panes, and red and white carpet. The Evoker raises its arms when casting a spell, has a fangs attack that look like a bear trap biting you. They drop a totem of undying (which I will cover a little further down). Another Illager will be the Vindicator. They are hostile and will be wielding a weapon, an axe. A Vex is a summon, summoned by the Evoker, that looks like a ghost that flys around and will have a red mark texture change when it’s about to attack and will wield a sword.
Now, the totem of undying. It is a totem that you can hold in your main hand or your offhand (instead of a shield) that will protect you should you die. Who hasn’t been traveling down the side of a cavern only to have a creeper find you, explode, and knock you down about 30 blocks. Well, if you are holding this, it will stop you from dying but it will become used and disappear in a swirl that then flies into your face which, seems like a very bad idea if you’re trying to flee from something that just killed you. Hopefully this animation changes by the time it is released.
There are a lot of other smaller things as well and you can find a whole change log by following here. Keep in mind, there is no release date yet and some things can be added or changed before release. They did say that 1.11 will be a smaller update than 1.10 though so though i’m excited about the updates, I really was hoping for a little more to do with exploration since this has been dubbed the “Exploration” update. When it is released, I will absolutely be writing about it again to go in more details after trying them out to give my impressions so keep an eye out for that.
The closing ceremonies started by covering everything that was released and announced in the updates. They also mentioned the Chinese mythology pack coming to consoles and showed videos. It will new skins and resource packs to give it a little Far Eastern flair. The video for this can be found here. There was also a world premiere of a Minecraft music video called “Starless Night” by Ant Venom with animation by Blue Jerome Animations. It was fairly catchy but not what I’d consider good music but the video was actually really cool and actually showed off the new treasure maps that were just announced which was a very nice touch.
In the Console panel they discussed that banners, beets, and polar bears will be added soon with an update. Along with these will be new blocks. After this was just a recap video, and a lot of thanks to the organizations and charities that helped out with Minecraft. One of them I wrote about yesterday but bears repeating. Block by Block is a great charity and if you want to know more you can visit their website.
Thank you for reading my updates and if you have questions or comments please leave them here or on Facebook and I’ll try my best to answer them.
