Last year was a big one for the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre. In fact, out of the 15 biggest box office grosses, 9 are Sci-Fi or Fantasy movies. Due to this huge success the entertainment industry has decided to continue delivering the nerd community what they crave and this year is about to be the richest year yet. Here’s a list of the most important nerdy releases of 2017.
Logan (March 3rd)
We open the year with one of the most awaited movies ever since the release of the X Men movies. Fans have been requesting a mature, intimate movie about Wolverine for years, so the standards for this film are very high. Hopes too are very high; I for once can’t wait to get a serious and substantive release from the X Men series especially after the disappointing X Men Apocalypse. Fortunately we don’t have to wait that long since Logan opens in three months.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume II (May 1st)
After the big success of the first volume, Guardians of the Galaxy returns with even more action, sarcasm and awesome soundtrack. The cast is mostly the same staring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista. New comers in this second volume include Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone.
Wonder Woman (June 2nd)
Staring Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, this film comes as the first DC comics’ release of 2017. After a disappointing year for DC with Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad both receiving endless bashing from critics, this movie might be DC’s great come back. The story follows Wonder Woman as she discovers her full powers in World War I. I must admit that the trailer of this movie was impressive with amazing effects, dynamic music and great cast.
Spider-Man Homecoming (July 4th)
First introduced in Captain America: Civil War, the new Spider-Man played by Tom Holland has now his own movie. The plot follows a young Peter Parker who inspired by his adventure with the Avengers, wants to explore his power under the watchful eye of Tony Stark. The trailer revealed a light hearted, funny movie as expected. This is the third marvel movie so will it come to the level of its precedents?
War of the Planet of the Apes (July 14th)
Next on our list is the third chapter of the block buster franchise Planet of the Apes. This comes after two very successful movies that include impressive aesthetics and a powerful story. The last movie set a great ground for this movie so let’s hope that it will be as pleasing as the other two.
Thor Ragnarok (July 28th)
After four years with no Thor movies, Marvel offers us Thor Ragnarok. In this movie Thor, the Hulk and Doctor Strange come together to face off against intergalactic enemies. I am very excited about this group coming together. I think it’s the most interesting combo of superheroes that we had so far and I’m sure it will include a lot of funny moments and great action scenes.
Blade Runner 2049 (October 5th)
This May be one of the least known releases but it is definitely worth a place on this list. Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling are enough to make you want to watch the movie. This movie is of course the sequel of the popular fantasy/drama 1982 release. Let’s hope that this movie was worth the wait.
Kingsman the Golden Circle (October 6th)
After the surprisingly great Kingsman: the Secret Service, director Mathew Vohn comes back with a sequel of the crime movie. In this film , Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong), two British spies, travel to the United States to join forces with their American counterparts. There’s no trailer yet to give us hints of this upcoming release so we’ll have to leave it to imagination for the moment.
Justice League (November 17th)
The long awaited Justice League gets released on November 17th. In Justice League, Batman and Wonder Woman assemble a team consisting of the Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and the newly resurrected Superman to face the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of parademons. I think that out of all the movies on this list this might be the most exciting story but it’s up to the directors to make this movie either amazing or a real disappointment.
Star Wars Episode VIII (December 15th)
The long awaited Episode VIII finally comes out on December 15th. Star Wars is staring to make a habit of releasing their movies at the end of each year and its working perfectly for them. Their latest release Rogue One: a Star Wars story is approaching a billion dollars in the box office although it’s only been released 3 weeks ago. After the death of actress Carrie Fisher aka Princess Leia, Star Wars is getting even more heat. So will it be the biggest grossing movie of the year?
